An antique butler’s desk is a beautiful historic piece that, just as the name implies, was given to the butler or head servant of a household. In the 19th century, more and more wealthy households became reliant on literate household help to be in charge of bookkeeping and to keep track of other documents. This standing antique secretary desk became a key tool in keeping the household (and sometimes business) organized.
Antique Secretary Desk
This antique secretary desk looks like a chest of drawers but the top drawer folds down and allows the piece to transform to a standing desk. The interior of the desk has lovely pigeonhole compartments and small drawers. The original surface was most likely leather or felt but has been replaced with a green felt. Beautiful flame mahogany grain, incredible scroll details and beautiful classic form gives this piece tons of presence and grandeur. Perfect for a historic home and a lovely statement piece!
This antique desk has been refinished and restored. Our restoration team also replaced the felt.
