Antique Tall Chest
This fabulous piece dates to late 18th century, c.1795, and is a testament to Pennsylvania country craftsmanship and ingenuity. All of the drawers are hand-dovetailed in the front and back. The maker of the antique tall chest employed excellent wood working techniques. Thus, this piece has survived so beautifully.
Obviously, the shear number of drawers and height of the piece indicates storage was vital to the maker and user of this piece. A tall chest such as this can hold quite a few garments, without taking up too much floor space. The chest is prominent and quite stately, but no unneeded flourish was added to the piece. In its simplicity, this antique tall chest is quite utilitarian. Yet, it does require some assistance to use. In fact, most people need a step stool just in order to reach the top drawers!
This tall chest has survived and aged beautifully, and would find a place of honor in a period home. A period piece such as this would look perfect in a bedroom. However, it would almost be a shame to tuck this antique chest of drawers away from sight! Perhaps the new owner will find a place for it within the more public spaces of his home. Regardless, this tall chest of drawers will remain a focal point for many years to come.
