Antique Mule Chest

Of course, this antique mule chest has a beautiful, yet simple design. The chest features simple bracket feet. It has two drawers in the body of the chest. Of course, it has ample room in the lift chest area.

This chest is made of a soft wood, like poplar. So, it does have some signs of age and use, which add to the rusticity of the chest. It has lots of character.

Most likely, the chest dates to the first quarter of the 19th century. Chests such as these were a simple storage staple in the 1800s, used primarily for blankets and clothing.

We gently restored the chest by adding shellac to the interior. We also repaired one of the feet. Most likely, the brass Hepplewhite style hardware was added at a later date. However, we thought they looked nice with the aged wood.
