An antique chest of drawers, especially a two-over-three chest with a mahogany finish, can be a classic and elegant piece of furniture. Here are some factors to consider when evaluating its worth:

  1. Age: The age of the chest of drawers is a significant factor in determining its value. Generally, older pieces are more sought after by collectors, especially if they are from the 18th or 19th centuries.
  2. Quality of Construction: Examine the craftsmanship and construction of the chest. High-quality materials, such as solid mahogany wood, dovetail joints, and sturdy hardware, indicate superior craftsmanship and durability.
  3. Condition: Assess the condition of the chest of drawers carefully. Look for any signs of damage, such as scratches, dents, cracks, or missing pieces. Original finishes and hardware add value, so it’s essential to maintain them if possible.
  4. Style and Design: The design and style of the chest can influence its value. Traditional styles, such as Chippendale, Hepplewhite, or Sheraton, are often more desirable among collectors of antique furniture.
  5. Provenance: A documented history or provenance, such as being part of a notable collection or associated with a famous maker, can increase the value of the chest.
  6. Market Demand: The current demand for antique furniture, particularly mahogany chests of drawers, can affect their market value. Consider researching recent sales of similar items to gauge market trends and pricing.
  7. Size: Larger chests with more drawers may command higher prices, especially if they offer ample storage space and versatility.
  8. Authenticity: Verify the authenticity of the piece by examining any maker’s marks, labels, or signatures. Antique furniture from renowned makers or regions may carry higher value.
  9. Restoration: Determine if the chest has undergone any restoration or repairs. While minor restoration work to maintain the integrity of the piece is acceptable, extensive alterations or refinishing may affect its value.
  10. Proper Documentation: Keep any documentation, receipts, or appraisals associated with the chest of drawers, as they can help establish its provenance and authenticity.

To determine the value of your antique mahogany chest of drawers, consider consulting with antique furniture experts, appraisers, or dealers specializing in period furniture. They can provide insights based on the specific details, condition, and market demand for your piece. Additionally, researching recent sales of similar items through auction houses or online marketplaces can help determine its market value.
