Antique Desk – Empire Desk

empire desk

Flamboyant, beautiful and unusual mahogany antique Empire desk from circa 1850. This phenomenal antique desk has incredible detail. It has no shortage of carvings and beautiful flame mahogany detail.

Empire Desk

This empire desk has exquisite features. One immediately notices the flame mahogany bowed drawers, lion paw feet, Greek key tooled leather top, and acanthus and feather carved columns. The leather writing surface extends outwards and then tucks away, allowing added practicality to the piece. The top is made up of three sections, with a locking cabinet and drawer in the center, making it a perfect pedestal for books, a desk lamp or an antique clock.

The legs and stretcher base are beautifully carved and feature rosettes and acanthus leaf carvings and a delightful lions paw. Of course, this antique desk is quintessential American Empire Style, with a taste for the extravagant! The paw feet are great symbols of wealth and power. Indeed, the paw feet are also echos of Grecco-Roman pieces and were common during the Empire Period. The rich flame mahogany sets the Empire desk apart as a true piece of art. The back is finished, making it a beautiful piece in front of a window or in the center of a room.

This Empire Desk has been sensitively restored and refinished. Thus, the deep mahogany has a rich sheen. There are still some signs of age to the piece, a few breaks to the veneer and a few marks to the desk top. Finally, new keys are being made to each of the locks, as the original keys were misplaced. We added the leather desk surface.
